Ever largest Ilisha Catch in Bangladesh


On August 10, 2016 a fisherman has caught a big Hilsa weighing more than 3.5 kilograms- and it could be the biggest one caught in recent years. Akter Hossain Maji netted the fish from Meghna river-mouth on Wednesday in Monpura Island It weighs 3.5 kg. Now a days it is very rare to catch ilsha fish weighing more than 1.5 kg. An average ilsha weighs 700 to 800 gm.


Tenualosa ilisha (ilishhilsahilsa herring orhilsa shad) is a species of fish in the herring family (Clupeidae), and a popular food fish in South Asia. The fish contributes about 12% of the total fish production and about 1% of GDP in Bangladesh.  In Bangladesh and West Bengal during Pohela Boishakh (the first day of the Bangali New Year),it is customary to have ilish with panta bhat (Fermented Rice) typically at breakfast. The meal is the traditional way to celebrate the Bengali new year. It is the National Fish of Bangladesh.
