NASA satellite shares a new image of Marree Man, an Australian carving that has puzzled scientists for decades: CNN

It is unclear who created the giant geoglyph or why, but the large earthen figure has drawn attention to a remote part of South Australia for two decades.
It is unclear who created the giant geoglyph or why, but the large earthen figure has drawn attention to a remote part of South Australia for two decades.
(CNN)NASA confirms one of the greatest modern art mysteries is still going strong in Australia. A pilot discovered the mysterious 2.6-mile-long geoglyph of an aboriginal hunter in 1998, etched into the earth, and to this day no one knows how it got there.

The Marree Man gained new life in 2016 when a group from the figure's namesake town of Marree plowed the lines to keep the man from fading due to erosion. Now, NASA is sharing an image taken in June showing the success of their efforts.

So far, the restoration team's belief that their preservation will last longer than the original holds up. They created wind grooves, designed to trap water and encourage the growth of vegetation, according to NASA. They hope that eventually the man will turn green. Many have tried to discover the origin of the Marree Man.

(CNN)The rafflesia plant is often referred to as a "monster flower" for its parasitic properties and repugnant stench. Indonesian wildlife officials might've found the most monstrous flower of them all.
A rafflesia that recently bloomed in a West Sumatran forest is nearly 4 feet in diameter -- that would make it the largest flower ever recorded, according to the Natural Resources and Conservation Center in West Sumatra.

Rare Nilgai rescued in Bangladesh

The once-believed to be extinct Nilgai -- the largest antelope in Asia -- was rescued by local administration from Jotbazar village of Naogaon's Manda upazila yesterday. It was taken to the animal rescue centre in Rajshahi last evening after the administration handed it over to the wildlife conservation division of the forest department, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mushfiqur Rahman.

“The Nilgai has injuries all over its body,” said Rahman. The nilgai was declared extinct in Bangladesh by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but it was found in India's West Bengal, said Jahangir Kabir, an inspector of the wildlife conservation division in Rajshahi.
The animal had also been captured in Thakurgaon last year.

Manda locals chased the antelope when they found it roaming around Jotbazar area around 9:30am, according to the officials.Surprised by the presence of a creature unseen before, hundreds of villagers cornered the animal in a pond and later caught it.

“The villagers were preparing to slaughter it for a meal,” said Jahangir Kabir. However, someone later reported the capture of a “big deer” and informed UNO Rahman. He then sent local forest officials and policemen to the scene, who rescued the animal. It was taken to the UNO office in the afternoon and handed over to the forest department. “Our first priority is to give treatment to the Nilgai as it bears numerous injuries,” said Inspector Kabir.

The forest department rescued another female Nilgai from Thakurgaon last year which is still at the rescue centre in Dinajpur, he said.“We will seek advice from higher officials on whether to arrange a breeding for the Nilgai or release it back to the wild,” he said. Nilgais were found in the north of Bangladesh until 1940s when they were last sighted in Tetulia and afterwards were declared extinct from this country. Source: The Daily Star: January 23, 2019

The Pancake Rocks - Newzealand

Punakaiki is a small community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, between Westport and Greymouth. The community lies on the edge of the Paparoa National Park.

The Pancake Rocks are a very popular tourist destination at Dolomite Point south of the main village. The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), these form the main attraction of the area.

The Pancake Rocks are presently explorable by a number of walkways winding through the rock formations, parts of these wheelchair-accessible and others carved into stairways up and down the rock faces. State Highway 6, the only through road on the West Coast, passes through the town. All aboard India's joyful 'toy train' - Shimla

india-232725_1920_Wolfgang Reindl:Pixabay

(CNN) — There's just something romantic about slow, narrow-gauge, rail journeys.
In a world of where everyone is rushing to get to their destination on flights, bullet trains and highways, these remnants of the past give you time to sit back and enjoy traveling at a contemplative pace, without the rush.
India's Kalka-Shimla toy train is among the most impressive representatives of this type of rail travel, regularly topping global "most scenic" trip lists.
UNESCO added it to its World Heritage list in 1999, calling it an "exceptional technical achievement in the development of the Himalayan mountains." The listing includes two other remarkable Indian mountain railways: the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Source: CNN
