Wilson Stump

The Wilson stump (ウィルソン株 Wilson kabu?) is at elevation 1,030m in Yakushima. The tree, Sugi, when it was cut by theShimazu clan under order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi to build Hōkō-ji in 1586, had an estimated age of over 3,000 years. The base circumference is 32 m and 4.39 m across at chest height. The hollow is 10tatami width and contains a smallKamidana.

This stump is the remains of the tallest sugi to have existed in the forests of Yakushima (approximately 44 meters).  It was felled in the 1580's possibly by order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.  Records indicate that a large tree was shipped from the island, but there are no records of which tree it was.  Wilson took a number of photographs of this stump and the surrounding area and only recently were these photographs recovered in the Harvard University archive (USA).  So large is this stump that visitors can walk around inside it – although it can get busy inside during the peak season.
