Giant Baghair fish caught in Bangladesh

A rare-breed 58- kilogram Baghair (Bagarius bagarius) fish caught from the river Jamuna drew the attraction of the enthusiastic people as it was brought from Gaibandha to Bogra district town on Wednesday morning. Baghair fish is critically endangered in the country due to habitat loss and food scarcity.

Fishermen of Tara Miah's boat netted the giant fish from the Jamuna River at Balashighat area of Fulbari upazila in Gaibandha on Tuesday. Tara Mia demanded Tk 42,000 for selling the fish. But it could not be known who bought the fish at last. Baghair is an endangered fish. International Conservation Union of Nature (IUCN) listed the species in their red data book as precariously endangered.

Baghair is available in fresh waters of Bangladesh, India, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sumatra, Borneo and Java. The fish feeds on shrimp, bloodworms, frog and other small fishes. It breeds prior to the rainy season.
