One of
Italy's most popular and photographed buildings, the Leaning Tower of
Pisa is known worldwide for its tilting position. Located in the city
of Pisa, the famous landmark is the campanile, or bell tower, of the
surrounding cathedral and piazza complex known as Campo dei Miracoli, or Field
of Miracles. A fine example of Romanesque architecture, the tower was
constructed in three stages over a period of 200 years beginning in
1173. Just two years after the initial construction, the tower began to
tilt due to an unstable foundation of soft ground and was left alone
for almost a century. When the construction resumed the engineers
built higher floors with one side taller than the other to compensate for
the tilt and the tower was finally finished in the 2nd half of the 14th century.
While the tower now leans at about 4 degrees, it has been stabilized by cement
injections in the 1920s. Since 2001, the famous tower is again open
to those wishing to climb it’s 296 steps to the top.
